#1 Beads for Needs

The Maasai women, renowned for their intricate beadwork, find themselves at the crossroads of tradition and modernity. Meticulously crafted by hand as it has been for centuries, their artisan heritage continues to battle (since the pandemic) the threat of fading into obscurity.

In our inaugural project, Beads for Needs, we witness the transformative impact of beads on fostering a sense of pride and identity. For this collaboration, we are grateful to partner with New York-based bead artists and the dynamic mother-daughter duo, Bert and Dana, the creative force behind Park & Lex NYC, and Maasai bead artisans Mari and her daughter (pictured here).

By generously donating $8,000 worth of assorted glass beads (painstakingly shipped from New York to Narok, Kenya) Bert and Dana have offered more than material support – they have extended a lifeline to a tradition deeply interwoven with the fabric of Maasai identity. This collaboration transcends the transactional nature of aid, embodying a narrative of four women and their profound dedication to the craft of beadwork.

Selected pieces from this collaboration will soon be available.

Our Project #1 Beads for Needs stands as a testament to the potential for positive change when female artistic communities from across the globe come together in solidarity and compassion.
